Production Shift Manager (2nd Shift, 4pm-2:30am)

ROLE

The Production Shift Manager reports to the Director of Manufacturing and is responsible for all production activities in the facility for his/her shift. The position will play an important role in helping to foster a culture of sustainable change through the creation and embedding of lean methodology, fostering a safety culture and seasoned leadership. The Production Shift Manager will act as the assistant to the Director of Manufacturing by supporting daily production activities which help support lean manufacturing by developing a team of highly motivated production associates and technicians.

WHAT YOU WILL BE RESPONSIBLE FOR

  • Ensure safe production operations and instill a positive Interdependent Safety Culture throughout the facility.
  • Sustain and assist in improving the Vital Proteins Quality System to ensure a superior product is delivered to our customers.
  • Lead, Manage and Develop the production team across all activities to ensure safe and sustained operations.
  • Accomplishes manufacturing staff results by communicating job expectations; planning, monitoring, and appraising job results; coaching, counseling, and disciplining employees; initiating, coordinating, and enforcing systems, policies, and procedures.
  • Maintains staff by helping recruit, select, and train employees.
  • Maintains work flow by monitoring steps of the process; setting processing variables; observing control points and equipment; monitoring personnel and resources; studying methods; implementing cost reductions; developing reporting procedures and systems; facilitating corrections to malfunctions within process control points; initiating and fostering a spirit of cooperation within and between departments.
  • Completes production plan by scheduling and assigning personnel; accomplishing work results; establishing priorities; monitoring progress; revising schedules; resolving problems; reporting results of the processing flow on shift production summaries.
  • Maintains quality service by establishing and enforcing organization standards.
  • Ensures operation of equipment by coordinating maintenance and repairs with the Maintenance Department; Assist in evaluating new equipment and techniques.
  • Provides manufacturing information by compiling, initiating, sorting, and analyzing production performance records and data; answering questions and responding to requests.
  • Ensure all production records and data is properly recorded into the ERP system.
  • Resolves personnel problems by analyzing data; investigating issues; identifying solutions; recommending action.
  • Maintains professional and technical knowledge by attending educational workshops; reviewing professional publications; establishing personal networks; benchmarking state-of-the-art practices; participating in professional societies.
  • Identifying and delivering service improvement activity across the business through employing process improvement methodologies and the application of innovative thinking
  • Supporting the delivery of better value and greater efficiency through the identification and elimination of unnecessary complexity within business processes and identification of better ways of working
  • Identifying trends and process variations as part of establishing a continuous improvement monitoring system
  • Assisting in the development and implementation of a ‘best-in-class’ continuous improvement strategy
  • Taking ownership of change initiatives from evolution/efficiency identification through to project delivery via internal governance and controls
  • Working with other team members and business services departments to devise new support  material based on the revised processes, to include training, reporting and systems enhancements
  • Conducting daily Point Kaizens or Huddles to support continuous improvement activities.
  • Ensure Continuous Improvement activities are sustained and/or improved upon.
  • Contributes to team effort by accomplishing other duties as needed.

WHO YOU ARE

  • Bachelors Degree in Engineering, Industrial Technology, Manufacturing, or Food Science
  • 7+ years of experience, or 15 + years equivalent technical experience
  • 5 + yrs of Production Management 
  • Prior experience in a food manufacturing facility highly preferred
  • Experience in autonomous leadership of teams/shift of 20+ employees
  • Must be technical problem solver with ability to trouble shoot issues and implement resolutions quickly
  • Must be organized, able to multi-task, and follow direction set by leadership
  • Must have effective communication skills and comfortable working will team members across the whole organization
  • Must be able to read, write and understand English
